‘La Muñeca (grannies/abuelas)’ is part of a body of paintings in which Stein explores feminine archetypes, particularly dolls. La Muñeca translates from Spanish to mean both 'doll' and 'wrist'. For Stein this double meaning encapsulates the relationship between process and iconography in the painting. In this title Stein includes the Spanish translation for Grandma, Abuela. This work depicts a 1950s nurse doll, which Stein associates with her maternal grandmother who was psychic, suffered with depression and worked as a nurse. The repeated imagery of the doll creates a ghostly quality to the painting.
