Cause & Effect (1980) has centres of activity that the eye is drawn to, which Beattie refers to as ‘constellations’ drawing a parallel to the work of Miró, whose paintings render an inner universe in a recognisable set of symbols. Beattie views the formal elements of his paintings as a cast of ‘characters’ that reoccur throughout his works, depicted in the artist’s system of visual codes and painterly language.
