Corridors of Uncertainty is a large-scale work that continues Beattie’s ongoing exploration of the limits and possibilities of abstract pictorial space using spatial components such the enclosed cells shown in this painting. The ‘cells’ as Beattie calls them, represent complex ciphers for recession, depth and space. Corridors of Uncertainty follows his common theme of being unsure or uncertain, a feeling that Beattie feels when beginning a painting. As Beattie put it: ‘The great cricketer and commentator Geoffrey Boycott describes the moment where a batsman, facing a ball coming towards his off-stump, is unsure where the ball is going to bounce and how it will swerve. It’s a difficult judgement and easy to get out. I feel that way when I am facing a canvas. I even called one painting Corridors of Uncertainty (2005).’
