Webb’s works take their titles from places she has visited. San Filippo II (2008) was created after she rode a horse between Florence and Sienna, Italy. The work evokes this journey and more specifically the Romanesque architecture of the Florence Baptistry. Always seeking new languages for her paintings, Webb was struck by the marble of the building, which has a distinctive outline of green marble framing the white blocks. This observation is apparent in San Filippo II in the delineated squares, which activate the picture plane.
Webb then returns to her studio after her travels to create her carefully considered compositions. In the preliminary stages, the artist makes small paintings and collages to experiment with colors and consistency of the paint. Aiming for there to be an all over quality to the work, she experiments with different combinations of squares in diagonal compositions.
