Stemming from Dawood’s longstanding interest in esoteric geometry, in Passion of Darkly Noon the artist takes a geometric form and then places an ellipse at its centre. Which turns it into an eye looking back at the viewer, while also revealing the subtle layers of the pattern and stitch work of the ground behind it. The eye as it were illuminating both subject and object of the viewer’s gaze, while also presenting itself as a subject gazing at the viewer. The work takes its name from an eponymous 1995 film directed by Philip Ridley.
