Hales is thrilled to announce that LJ Roberts 2012 work, Theodore (ted) Kerr at the ACT UP 25th Anniversary Protest on Wall Street has been acquired by the New-York Historical Society, NY, USA, purchased through the generosity of Pamela and David Hornik.
Roberts embroiders portraits of their friends, collaborators, and lovers within New York City's queer and trans communities. Roberts spent up to one year stitching each portrait within the series, taking inspiration from both photographs and memory. As much a tribute to the subjects as they are to the public and private places that provide safe spaces for vital exchange. The artist considers the series as a way of dismantling the heteronormative tendencies of portraiture. This piece is a masterful example of Robert's intricate, hand-stitched embroidery work. This work honors LJ's friend Theodore (ted) Kerr. Kerr is a Brooklyn based writer and organizer whose work focuses on HIV/AIDS, community, and culture.
