The Baltimore Museum of Art acquires works by Chitra Ganesh

Hales is delighted to announce that the Baltimore Museum of Art has acquired two major print works by Chitra Ganesh, ‘Sultana's Dream’ (2018) and ‘Architects of the Future’ (2014).

Ganesh’s ‘Sultana’s Dream’ is inspired by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s 1905 feminist utopian story of the same title. Although not particularly well known, the piece holds a singular position among early feminist science fiction. Ganesh’s series of 27 linocut prints illustrate elements of the text and use its imagery and themes to explore urgent topics of the political present. Ganesh demonstrates the enduring relevance of feminist utopian imaginaries in offering an invaluable means of envisioning a more just future.

‘Architects of the Future’ (2014), a four-part series of woodblock and screenprints,  draws on visual languages of futurity from the 1960s and 1970s, and combines epic myth with futurism.

Both series were produced and published in collaboration with Durham Press in Durham, PA.
