Martyn Cross | In Other Worlds: Acts of Translation at Focal Point Gallery

Martyn Cross, Oblivion, 2019 will be included in In Other Worlds: Acts of Translation at Focal Point Gallery, developed in collaboration with The Roberts Institute of Art, from 25 June to 13 September 2025.

Bringing together works from the David and Indrė Roberts Collection, the exhibition engages with the theme of translation — through storytelling and myth, history and memory, language and materiality. At a time when anything can seem open to interpretation, yet nothing appears to hold the exhibition asks: how do we engage with multiple perspectives without collapsing into relativism? How can we communicate across distances while still recognising differences? How do we engage with others — people, histories, ideas — without assuming full knowledge or easy equivalence?

Martyn Cross is a UK-based painter whose work reflects a timelessness, making them hard to place in linear narratives of history. Inspired by medieval imagery, various literary genres and printed books, his paintings blend landscapes and figures with uncanny, otherworldly elements. Martyn will participate in The Roberts Institute of Art Residency from July to August 2025.
