Three works by Chitra Ganesh, She the Question, The History of Encounter; She the Question, Patience and She the Question, She the Garbage Picker, 2012 have been acquired by The Block Museum of Art, IL, selected by the 2024-2025 Block Museum Student Associate cohort.
She the Question was originally published as a 24-page comic book that was commissioned in 2012 as part of a large solo exhibition of the same name at the Gothenburg Kunsthalle in Sweden. The comic is part of a larger body of work inspired by images from the Amar Chitra Katha - a widely disseminated Indian comic book series, initiated in 1967 as an educational tool to teach stories from Indian folklore and fables in a mass mediated, popular form. In Ganesh's bold departure, her work critiques subtexts of racial, religious, casteist, patriarchal and socio-economic prejudices, while rendering historically marginal figures as central actors that exceed formal conventions of representation.
