Hales is delighted to announce a conversation between artist LJ Roberts and Charlotte Ickes, Curator of Time-Based Media and Special Projects at the National Portrait Gallery, on the subject of Roberts’ work, Stormé at Stonewall, currently on display in the museum’s collection galleries.
Stormé at Stonewall is a light-box portrait of activist Stormé DeLarverie, who is said to have thrown the first brick at Stonewall—the uprising credited with launching the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in 1969. Roberts created this unconventional portrait in response to DeLarverie’s absence in mainstream narratives about the history of the Stonewall rebellion.
