Hales is delighted to share an in conversation between artist LJ Roberts and Charlotte Ickes, curator of time-based media art at the National Portrait Gallery, on the occasion of Roberts’ work Stormé at Stonewall.
Stormé at Stonewall is a light-box portrait of activist Stormé DeLarverie, who is said to have thrown the first brick at Stonewall—the uprising credited with launching the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in 1969. Roberts created this unconventional portrait in response to DeLarverie’s absence in mainstream narratives about the history of the Stonewall rebellion.
