Hales is pleased to share that Jordan Ann Craig’s solo exhibition, it takes a long time to stay here: Paintings by Jordan Ann Craig is now on view at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Greensburg, PA, USA through 18 January 2027. The exhibition originated at the Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University (Evanston, IL), and is currently traveling the U.S., supported by Art Bridges.
The show features large-scale abstract paintings that reflect Craig’s engagement with Indigenous, especially Northern Cheyenne, aesthetic traditions and her dynamic and innovative exploration of color, line, and geometric form. Craig’s practice often begins with research in museum collections and archives—studying, learning from, and engaging in a dialogue with traditional Indigenous artistic forms, such as beadwork, pottery, and textiles. She also draws inspiration from the landscape of what is now the Southwestern United States, where she lives and works.
The exhibition title, it takes a long time to stay here, is drawn from the poem “spinning air” by Northern Cheyenne poet m.s. RedCherries. For Craig, the line suggests how staying in place fosters deeper connections with people, cultures, and landscapes. As you move through the gallery, notice how your interpretation shifts with prolonged engagement, influenced by each painting’s title, composition, and relationship to other paintings.
