Announcing Virginia Jaramillo Catalogue Raisonné Project

The Virginia Jaramillo Catalogue Raisonné seeks to establish a definitive, living record of the artist’s oeuvre, advancing critical understanding of her aesthetic vision, career trajectory, and enduring influence. Through rigorous research and reflective scholarship, the project situates Jaramillo’s work within broader art historical contexts. In keeping with the innovation and integrity of her practice, the catalogue will be available digitally and in a limited print edition.

Covering works from 1958 onward, the catalogue will document approximately 1,200 objects, including studies and related archival materials. It will illuminate Jaramillo’s pivotal role in American Minimalism and Abstraction—particularly in New York—while tracing affinities with her contemporaries and emphasizing her distinct formal innovations.

Expanding upon the 2023 retrospective Principle of Equivalence, presented at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the catalogue raisonné constitutes the most comprehensive examination of her work to date. It will address previously undocumented works in private collections, commissioned pieces, and numerous works on paper that warrant further scholarly consideration.

Jaramillo has been an active participant in the project, offering access to her studio and archives and engaging in extensive interviews. With the support of Hales Gallery, the catalogue will include newly commissioned scholarly essays and organize entries both chronologically and by geographic location of production, offering insight into both major shifts and subtle developments in her practice.

Directed by Erin Dziedzic and scheduled for publication in 2035, the Virginia Jaramillo Catalogue Raisonné seeks to preserve the artist’s legacy and affirm her vital contributions to American art.
