Rotimi Fani Kayode is included in Alliance, Infinity, Love – In the Face of the Other at the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg, Germany 2026 through 22 September 2026.
The 9th Triennial of Photography in Hamburg, brings together a broad spectrum of photographic voices that challenge dominant narratives, reclaim overlooked perspectives, and foster dialogue across social and cultural divides. Curated by Autograph's Director, Professor Mark Sealy, the exhibition honours photography's capacity to evoke emotion, unsettle norms, and reveal what often remains unseen.
A highly influential figure in the history of art, Fani-Kayode, despite a tragically brief career, produced a complex body of photographic work that explores themes of race, sexuality, spirituality, and the self. Two bodies of work by Fani-Kayode are presented: a series of monochromatic photographs made in Brixton, London during the mid-to-late 1980s, and a group of performative and meticulously crafted colour portraits produced between 1987–1989, in the final years of Fani-Kayode's life.
