LJ Roberts, Theodore (ted) Kerr at the ACT UP 25th Anniversary Protest on Wall Street, 2012 is included in Democracy Matters at The New York Historical, NY, USA through 1 November 2026.
Drawing primarily from the permanent collections of The New York Historical, the exhibition explores how the concept of democracy has stretched, contracted, and shifted through key moments in the history of the nation; how competing understandings of it have come into conflict; and how those conflicts have reshaped its boundaries.
Roberts embroiders portraits of their friends, collaborators, and lovers within New York City’s queer and trans communities. Roberts spent up to one year stitching each portrait within the series, taking inspiration from both photographs and memory. As much a tribute to the subjects as they are to the public and private places that provide safe spaces for vital exchange. The artist considers the series as a way of dismantling the heteronormative tendencies of portraiture.
