Kay WalkingStick’s Wallowa Mountains Memory, Variation, 2004 is on view in Look Again: European Paintings 1300–1800, a reinstallation of The Met’s European collection galleries that juxtaposes historical works with later acquisitions to encourage visitors to reconsider the traditional canon.
An artist of Cherokee and Anglo heritage, WalkingStick frequently explores the duality of identity and human experience in her work. ‘Wallowa Mountains Memory, Variation’ is a diptych in oil and gold leaf on wood panel depicting Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains – the ancestral homeland of the Nez Perce – and combines landscape on the left, with abstraction on the right, incorporating a Nez Perce corn husk bag pattern.
