Kay WalkingStick, Nez Perce Crossing (2008) is included in Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from Tia Collection at Yorkshire Sculpture Park through 18 April 2027. Bringing together 65 works by 38 artists from Tia Collection, Hold to This Earth explores the enduring relationship between people and land through diverse artistic practices spanning multiple generations and Tribal Nations.
Nez Perce Crossing (2008) takes its title from the Nez Perce people's crossing of the Bitterroot Mountains during the Nez Perce War of 1877. Led by Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce travelled more than 1,100 miles in a fighting retreat in an attempt to reach safety in Canada before being defeated at the Battle of Bear Paw on 5 October 1877, just 40 miles south of the Canadian border. This history is present in WalkingStick's landscape work, with Nez Perce patterning overlaid—the delicate presence of the design transforms the panoramic vista into an active site.
