Sunil Gupta: I call you my love published by Trolley Books
I call you my love follows the transatlantic love letters in the late 80s between Sunil Gupta and Steve Dodd, illustrated by photographs taken by Sunil and alongside ephemera — envelopes, poetry, sketches, and newspaper clippings. Moving between the intimacy and mundanity of a long-distance relationship and the political realities of Thatcherism, Section 28, rising conservatism, and the AIDS crisis, the letters form a rich archive of queer love, desire, creativity, and community.
The book features Gupta's series, "Pretended" Family Relationships, also on view in Staging Resistance at Hales London through 17 October. Gupta reclaims the language of Section 28 to challenge its assumptions, combining portraits of same-sex couples, many interracial, with documentary-style images of protests against the legislation, accompanied by the poetry of Steve Dodd.
To mark the launch of the new publication, Trolley Books will host a book signing with Sunil Gupta at No.9 Cork Street, London, on Saturday 26 September, 3.30–5.30pm, featuring a conversation between Gupta and Chris Boot, former Director of Aperture and a longtime friend of the artist, who also appears in Gupta’s "Pretended" Family Relationships series.
