Hales is delighted to share Virginia Jaramillo’s participation in Hard Art, a major exhibition at MoMA PS1, New York. Bringing together over forty artists across three generations, the exhibition examines the legacy of abstract painting by Black artists in the United States from 1969 to the present.
The exhibition features two works by Jaramillo: Infraction IV (1970) and Untitled (1971). Both belong to her celebrated series of curvilinear paintings, characterised by sinuous lines stretching across expansive fields of colour, disrupting the measured geometry of hard-edge abstraction.
In 1971, Jaramillo was the only woman and Latina artist included in The De Luxe Show, one of the first racially integrated contemporary art exhibitions in the United States. Working alongside a network of abstract artists of colour, Jaramillo established abstraction as a powerful means of artistic and political autonomy.
Hard Art places her pioneering practice in dialogue with artists across generations, highlighting her enduring contribution to the history of American abstraction.
