Hales Gallery is pleased to announce the unveiling of Hew Locke's new public artwork, commissioned by Surrey County Council and the National Trust for Runnymede, to mark the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.
15 June 2015 will see the signature event for this important anniversary year at an international gathering at Runnymede, Surrey, where 800 years ago the feudal barons forced King John to seal the Magna Carta. Hew Locke's artwork, The Jurors, will be unveiled and will be a highlight of the commemoration for this historic occasion. The work is inspired by the impact of Magna Carta’s fundamental principles of justice and its international impact on campaigners, activists and the world’s legal systems and governments. This unique artwork will be the first for Runnymede that actively considers the contemporary relevance of Magna Carta and its on-going impact through the struggle for equal rights. The project is produced by Situations, a Bristol-based arts producer known for their ground-breaking approach to public art.
To celebrate the occasion a Great Charter Festival is being held on 14 June at Royal Holloway, University of London. There will be an "in conversation" event with Hew Locke and Justin Champion, Professor of the History of Early Modern Ideas at Royal Holloway, University of London, President of the Historical Association and Director of Magna Carta 2015 Legacy. The talk titled "Memory and memorialisation" will discuss how Locke developed this new public artwork, his response to this place and its international connections.
