Hew Locke in "EN MAS': Carnival and Performance Art of the Caribbean" at Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans

Hales Gallery is happy to announce Hew Locke's participation in a group show, EN MAS': Carnival and Performance Art of the Caribbeanat the Contemporary Arts Centre New Orleans, co-organised as a travelling exhibition by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York.

Curated by Claire Tancons and Krista Thompson, the show is a pioneering exploration of the influences of Carnival on contemporary performance practices in the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Conceived around a series of nine commissioned performances realised during the 2014 Caribbean Carnival season across eight cities in six different countries, the exhibition considers the connections between Carnival and performance, masquerade and social criticism, diaspora and transnationalism. Hew Locke's contribution is entitled Give and Take and was performed at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall during its Up Hill Down Hall - An Indoor Carnival event which coincided with Notting Hill Carnival in August 2014.
