Hales Gallery is pleased to announce The Artist and the Law, a conversation between Hew Locke and the Dean of Brooklyn Law School, Nicholas. W. Allard. The in-conversation is part of symposium, marking the 800th anniversity of Magna Carta and Constitution Day in the US.
Locke and Allard will be discussing Locke's sculpture The Jurors, commissioned to mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta and sited on the very meadow of Runnymede. How would you create a public sculpture that speaks not just to the British public, but to International visitors, and would remain relevant for many decades? Hew Locke's The Jurors incorporates images, people and abstract symbols relating to struggles for freedom, rule of law and equal rights. The work is not a parade of heroes or a memorial, but a prompt for discussion on the often conflicting concepts of Justice, which constantly shift across history and geography.
