Hales Gallery is excited to announce an artist talk by Richard Slee at the Academy of Design and Crafts, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Over the last decade or so, Richard Slee began to question his continuation of the use of ceramics as his dominating material. With enough technique and skills, there seems to be no need for learning more. Slee is not interested in the medium's abstract possibilities which are too restrictive for him. Thus, the question arises: what is the relevance of the material to him?
Increasingly Slee’s practice sees the work moving further away from history and ceramic references: its specialisation and justifications. The traces of interests such as: the domestic realm, and the decorative craft object, can still be detected within Slee’s work. He remains interested in the power of art within the home, an interior human scale. This talk will explore the above notions as well as, question how Slee has confronted ceramics from utility to futility, as work and play.
