Hales is pleased to announce that the Whitney Museum of American Art have acquired Sultana’s Dream (2018) by Chitra Ganesh.
Ganesh’s Sultana’s Dream is inspired by Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s 1905 feminist utopian story of the same title. The story was first published in the Indian Ladies’ Magazine, a women’s literary journal based in Madras, India. Although not particularly well known, the piece holds a singular position among early feminist science fiction. Ganesh’s series of 27 linocut prints, produced and published by Durham Press, illustrate elements of the text and use its imagery and themes to explore urgent topics of the political present. Ganesh demonstrates the enduring relevance of feminist utopian imaginaries in offering an invaluable means of envisioning a more just future.
