Sunil Gupta | Songs of Deliverance | Hammersmith Hospital

Hales is delighted to announce that Sunil Gupta's major commission, Songs of Deliverance, exploring LGBTQIA+ healthcare, is touring to Hammersmith Hospital and is on display in the main corridor until Thursday 24 November 2022.

This is the first time the complete series of works has been presented together. The series of photographic works were created during a year in residence at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington and Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith. They present moving portrayals of the lives of LGBTQIA+ people from the adult HIV Clinic and Gender Affirmation Surgery service.

For this new commission, Gupta spent a year working in residence at two London hospitals: St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington and Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith. Recruited via an open invitation, LGBTQIA+ patients from the adult HIV Clinic and Gender Affirmation Surgery service were invited to collaborate and spend time with Gupta. Necessarily, many of these dialogues took place via Zoom, while Gupta met others in their own familiar and community spaces; a church yard, the high street, parks, rivers, bars or grocery stores.
