The Whitney Museum of American Art acquires work by Virginia Jaramillo

Hales is proud to announce that the Whitney Museum of American Art has acquired Untitled (1967) by Virginia Jaramillo.

Untitled (1967) is an outstanding example of Jaramillo's early exploration into the pure essence of line and colour. Intensely vivid fields of colour are contained in precise blocks, disrupted by lines that curve and divide the picture plane. The composition is informed by Jaramillo's research into Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period and her interest in the concept of 'Ma,' which is concerned with negative space and its significance. An important piece informed by a non-western aesthetic; Untitled was an inspirational catalyst for her renowned Curvilinear series.
