Hales is excited to announce the inclusion of Anthony Cudahy in Public Private at Pond Society, Shanghai, through 20 July 2023.

 

Public Private surveys a cross-generation of 12 contemporary painters depicting intimate quotidian lives, interior spaces, nature and landscapes. The exhibition addresses themes relating to the intersection of the personal and public, intimacy and identity. Most striking is how each artist deftly deconstructs in their own way, academic techniques, art-historical references, cultural/pop culture, and figuration as reimagined astutely by this generation of painters. This allows painting and representative styles to emerge to create emotionally heightened narratives based on both lived and imagined experiences.

 

Formal techniques and conservative approaches are disrupted, showcasing a new and individual language for contemporary painting reimagined by the artists on view.

 

The curatorial framework is grounded in a nuanced approach to associations between paintings, with themes emerging from this focus on figuration in part 1 to allow a rethink of representation and the ever-changing dichotomies that exist between the political and emotional, real and imagined, public and private, and importantly, to encourage looking beyond the familiar and ordinary ways of seeing.
