Chitra Ganesh will be speaking at the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) at the University of Rochester, NY, on Thursday 12 December 2024, at 7pm.
The event coincides with MAG's current exhibition, Drawing as Discovery, where Ganesh's work Nightwatchers, a two-sided, mixed-media drawing featuring sequins and handwritten texts, is on display. During her talk, Ganesh will discuss her artistic process, inspirations, and work, followed by a Q&A session.
Across a twenty-year practice, Chitra Ganesh’s work evolved to encompass animations, wall drawings, collages, computer generated imagery, video, and sculpture. She often draws on Hindu and Buddhist iconography, negotiating her relationship to these images with the rise of right-wing fundamentalism in India and attempting to reconcile representations of femininity, sexuality, and power absent from the artistic and literary canons.
