Newark Museum of Art acquires work by Virginia Jaramillo

Hales is excited to announce that the Newark Museum of Art, NJ, USA has acquired Virginia Jaramillo's 1969 work, It Goes On, purchased through the 2024 Helen McMahon Brady Cutting Fund.

It Goes On, 1969 is exemplary of  Jaramillo's early exploration into the pure essence of line and colour. Intensely vivid fields of colour are disrupted by precise blocks and lines that curve, divide and intersect. An important piece informed by a non-western aesthetic;  It Goes On was an inspirational catalyst for her renowned Curvilinear series. The forms and colours for this painting were a result of Jaramillo's research into Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period and her interest in the concept of 'Ma,' which is concerned with negative space and its significance.
