Spirit Center, II (1992) is a diptych rendered in oil stick on single piece of paper mounted to canvas. One half depicts a section of basalt outcrop in Coconino County, Arizona, and the other, an abstract composition. WalkingStick has been making diptychs since the 1980s – exploring duality and the symbiotic relationship of land and spirit. WalkingStick states, ‘the diptych is an especially meaningful metaphor to express the beauty and power of uniting the disparate and this makes it particularly attractive to those of us who are biracial. It also visualizes the connection between our sacred earth and the cosmos, reminding us of the need to protect our planet.’
WalkingStick suggests depicting the landscape ‘is a dialogue with the mythic, the spiritual, with that with which transcends our bittersweet daily lives.’ The power and eternal quality of nature is felt in the monumental mountains, canyons, cliffs and vast skies. The landscapes reflect a balance between memory and lived experience, subtly evoking her personal history.
