Kay WalkingStick, North Rim Temple, 2023
Hales is proud to be in Art Basel Miami Beach’s 2023 Kabinett sector, with an important solo presentation of works by celebrated American artist Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee/Anglo) b.1935 Syracuse, NY. The presentation showcases WalkingStick’s critically recognized practice in which she has explored her indigenous heritage and contributed to the long tradition of landscape painting in American art history.
Hales will exhibit paintings made across the past decade—the artist’s iconic series of single viewpoint landscapes of North America in which WalkingStick reclaims the land by overlaying patterning from Native American material culture. In these works, she recognizes the specific peoples connected to the landscape and celebrates the beauty of non-industrial America, representing a knowledge of the earth and its sacred quality. In October, WalkingStick’s major solo, Kay WalkingStick/Hudson River School, opened at New-York Historical Society.
