Hales is delighted to share Gleefully Askew: A Gladys Nilsson Retrospective, now open at the Crocker Art Museum. On view through 29 November 2026, this landmark exhibition is the first-ever retrospective devoted to Gladys Nilsson’s work, celebrating more than six decades of her raucously off-beat paintings that are at once mischievous, exacting and profoundly observant. Women tower, teeter, zigzag and dance across Nilsson’s paintings, where the ordinary transforms into the delightfully absurd.
Bringing together approximately 115 watercolours, paintings, drawings and prints from major public and private collections across the United States, Gleefully Askew traces critical moments across Nilsson’s 60-year career. Unbound by region, medium or social decorum dictating how women can and should behave, the exhibition foregrounds her fiercely independent and experimental approach, affirming her enduring importance as one of the most original voices in contemporary American art.
